One of Jeff's coworkers gave Matthew this book and it's his current favorite. It took Graeme Base three years to complete the illustrations for Animalia and it shows. Each page is filled pictures intricately woven into a beautiful scene, and everything starts with the same letter! I know that Matthew loves it for the pictures of animals - alligators, fish, and gorillas. Jeff and I like it for the challenge of seeing, and naming, everything on the page. Many of the items are silly and don't belong in the setting that their in, like the "Zany Zebras Zigzagging in Zinc Zeppelins". Here's what happened while Jeff was reading to Matthew yesterday:
Jeff: Lazy lions lounging in the local library.
Matthew: Silence. Points to lobster on the page.
Jeff: Yep. That's a lobster. We won't find that in our local library. Unless, of course, we go to the Maine branch.
Sarah: Pees in her pants.
